Support for Migrant Workers and Other Lockdown-affected People in India
An Update Cum Appeal from Aman Prayas, Ranchi.
In response to the appeal signed by 4 signatories dated 06.04.2020 (during last year Covid crisis), Aman Prayas received 31.65 lakh. This was wholly spent in the following manner :
(1) Food rations for vulnerable households in Jharkhand (mainly those without ration cards, especially among dalits, adivasis and other disadvantaged groups ; and later for pregnant women requiring special nutrition) – about 6000 households. This costed 16.80 lakh.
(2) Cash support to migrant workers stranded outside the state (Rs 2,000 to 10,000 depending on the size and needs of the migrant group). We reached out to approximately 1550 stranded low-income migrants at locations like Delhi, Varanasi, Mumbai, Surat, Jammu, and Bangalore. These cash transfer for single or group amounted to 14.85 lakh.
We worked through a network of social workers, community organisations and NREGA Sahayta Kendra. In the state of Jharkhand, districts included Chatra, Latehar, Garhwa, Ranchi, Dumka, Pakur, Sahebganj, Bokaro, Simdega & West Singhbhum. Bihar districts of Muzaffarpur & Jamui were covered too.
Later, Aman Prayas received more financial support for carrying out work with the migrant populations. This fund was utilised for migrant survey and follow-up work which included support to them for children’s education, health needs, capacity building meets and information education services.
Careful accounts have been kept and acknowledgement mail / donation receipts have been issued to the Contributors. We have tried to ensure that the bulk of the funds reached migrant workers, their families, and other poor people affected.
Clarification – Aman Prayas does not have FCRA registration and hence is eligible to receive funds from an Indian account only. NRIs (having Indian passport) can contribute, but from an Indian account. Since it is essential for us to have a list of donors (for accounts audit), we ask for PAN numbers, but the donors do not get tax exemption as Aman Prayas is not having 80G registration.
We are grateful to all those who responded to the fund raise appeal in 2020. Now in 2021 we are yet again looking for further donations, to counter the second wave of Covid & lockdown situations.
Migrants are returning back home and they require support to regain their livelihoods and rebuild their lives. The central and state governments’ relief packages and schemes need to be monitored for their implementation; the ‘demand for work’ and its immediate payments need to be ensured. Health services require para-workers support. For these ground level actions we require further support.
